Getting an animal health certificate for pet travel

When planning your pet’s international journey, securing an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) is a crucial step. Essential for international journeys, an animal health certificate verifies your pet is valid for travel and in compliance with vaccination protocols.

Essential preparations for pet travel

Before embarking on a journey with your beloved animal, it’s crucial to meet specific health standards:

  • Identification: Ensure your dog, cat, or ferret has a microchip for easy identification.
  • Vaccinations: A rabies vaccine is mandatory. There’s a compulsory waiting period of 21 days following the initial rabies shot before your pet can travel.

Securing the necessary health documentation

To acquire the essential health document for your pet, follow these steps:

  • Visit our clinic with your pet, bringing their vaccination card and medical history.
  • Ensure your pet is over 12 weeks old to receive the rabies vaccination.
  • Complete a detailed form at our clinic, which includes:
    • Owner information
    • Pet details
    • Any previous pet passports
    • Rabies vaccination date
    • Blood test records, as needed
    • Treatment for canine tapeworm, if applicable
    • Planned entry country in the EU

Helping Your Pets Travel with Confidence

Travelling abroad with your pet can feel a little overwhelming at first, especially when there are forms, timings, and entry rules to think about. Our team is here to make that process clearer. We can help with pet health certificates, explain what is needed for an animal health certificate, and guide you through the steps involved in preparing the right pet travel documents before you leave.

Whether you need a dog health certificate, a cat health certificate, or a pet travel certificate for an upcoming trip, we can talk you through the requirements in a straightforward way. For dogs in particular, we can advise on a health certificate for dog travel, help arrange a dog travel certificate, and make sure the correct dog travel documents are in place at the right time. The aim is to give you peace of mind, so you can focus on the journey ahead knowing everything has been properly prepared.

Why your pet needs this documentation

These health documents are vital to comply with international travel requirements, safeguarding your pet and other countries from disease exposure.

Timeline for processing

This vital document can be issued up to ten days before your departure. Early planning is advised to meet any specific country regulations like additional tests or treatments. Initiate the process by contacting us well before your planned travel.

Validity period

The validity spans ten days from issuance for entry into the EU, continuing up to four months for intra-EU travel or until the rabies vaccination expires, whichever occurs first. For re-entry into Great Britain, the document remains valid for four months, assuming up-to-date rabies vaccination.

Costs involved

The fee for this health documentation is £189, covering the examination and all requisite paperwork. Additional pets are priced at £55.

There is an initial consult fee of £30 that needs to be booked 28 day prior to the Animal Health Certificate, to complete pre-paperwork and check rabies details. If a rabies injection is required, the consult fee will be deducted from the rabies vaccine cost.
